Prehistoric & Medieval Dordogne:
The Ancient Paintings, Castles and Stone Villages of the Black Périgord!
August 23-30, 2008

Bike Tour Daily Description:

Day 1 - August 23
We will pick you up in Sarlat in the early afternoon and take you to the Perigourdine farm where we will spend the week. After adjusting your bicycles, we will do a short ride (10 to 17 miles) to see the Chateau de Commarque, a medieval castle and the Cabannes du Breuil (optional). In the evening, we’ll brief you on the entire tour before you enjoy a delightful regional dinner.

Day 2 - August 24
Small country roads with virtually no traffic will lead us to the famous Lascaux caves that contain some of the most ancient and best-preserved prehistoric paintings; this is an experience that touches everyone, history buff or not. We’ll then return through several charming medieval stone villages. Avid cyclists can also ride to the small village of La Douze, home of one of the Dordogne’s most charming 12th century Roman chapels.

Day 3 - August 25
Winding little roads will lead us from one medieval site to the next, where you will have a chance to visit some of the country’s best-preserved castles including Chateau de Castelnaud and Chateau de Beynac and breathtaking ancient villages such as Domme and La Roque Gageac, perched high on cliffs overlooking the Dordogne valley. Avid cyclists can also use this day to ride an additional 20 miles on Cingles de Montfort, an aerial road cut into the cliffs beneath a fort, to reach the Fenelon castle.

Day 4 - August 26
Today’s ride will take us to visit the Chateau des Milandes. Famous American singer Josephine Baker purchased this Renaissance castle and raised her 12 children adopted from different countries here: this visit gives us fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most controversial stars of her time.

Day 5 - August 27
Today’s exquisitely beautiful ride leads us through the picturesque village of St Crepin before reaching Sarlat, where we’ll enjoy its weekly food market featuring some of France’s best produce and specialties, before having lunch there and resuming our ride. On the way back, we will have another photo op—a postcard view of the Chateau de Puymartin.

Day 6 - August 28
Limeuil, a striking medieval village set at the confluence of the Dordogne and Vézère Rivers is today’s first destination. After lunch, avid cyclists will enjoy a ride to the town of Cadouin to see its famous Abbey, while those taking it easier can enjoy a café on the terrace. Later, we will ride to a village where traditional life has been reconstructed—a chance to see a windmill producing flour and local artisans in traditional clothing brewing beer and producing a variety of products just as it was done centuries ago.

Day 7 - August 29
Today’s spectacular ride begins with a visit to the medieval village of Jacquou le Croquant, where we will enjoy a delicious local lunch next to the Vézère River. In the afternoon, we’ll visit Roque St Christophe, featuring prehistoric caves that were inhabited 55,000 years ago, as well as during the Middle Age and Renaissance periods. The vestiges of each civilization remain and tell much about each one’s history. Avid cyclists will again have the opportunity to ride more. Although it’s our last one, we will all share dinner at a table filled with an amazing selection of local food specialties and wine as we have every other evening.

Day 8 - August 30
We will wake up for a last sunrise over the beautiful Vézère Valley and, after breakfast, we will take you back to the Sarlat train station, where you will leave the Dordogne with both souvenirs and superb memories of some of France’s richest history, culture and gastronomy! Participants to the Pyrenees tour will transfer to Bordeaux or Biarritz.
